1. Join the Palm OS Developer Program.
Obtain a membership of Palm OS Developer Program to download tools such as Palm OS Developer Suite from the PalmSource, Inc.

2. Choose Your Core Platform.
The Palm OS core platform now encompasses two versions:

• Palm OS Garnet (above Palm OS 5.3) and
• Palm OS Cobalt (Palm OS 6).

There are three Palm OS application types:

• Palm OS 68K Application: It spans all Palm OS releases. The 68K API allows application code compiled for Dragonball processors to access the capabilities of Palm OS. Palm OS Garnet and Palm OS Cobalt are designed for handhelds with ARM-based processors.
  
  

  Both include PACE (Palm Application Compatibility Environment) which enables 68K applications to run on these Palm OS versions as well.

  
  
  1. 68K: The term 68K processor refers to the family of Motorola 68000 processors.
  2. ARM: The term ARM processor refers to the family of Advanced RISC Machine processors. An ARM processor is a type of 4-byte RISC processor, and is available from many sources.
