How to Build the Programming Exercise I

There are many ways to construct a web-enabled database system such as LAMP or ASP.NET. This approach uses the following steps including CGI, JDBC, and Oracle to create the system from the ground up:

1. Examining the exercise specifications very carefully,
2. Database and JDBC (or other host languages) setup,
3. Database design (E-R modeling or normalization),
4. Database implementation (SQL),
5. Web user interface construction [(X)HTML],
6. Calling a CGI script (Unix shell),
7. Calling a CGI script (Perl),
8. Database accessing embedded in Java host language (JDBC), and
9. Testing the exercise thoroughly.

These steps and tools are not definite nor unique. You may take other approaches. This approach has the following advantages and disadvantages:

• Advantages: It is powerful and flexible and has no problems implementing most web applications.


• Disadvantages: Primitive tools are used in this approach. Therefore, advanced programming skills are required.
