Champion of the Grand Forks County Chapter of North Dakota (61 students from eight area schools participated), MathCounts competitions
North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers on Grand Forks Herald, Sunday, February 13, 2011 —

Chapter 1 of the North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers recently hosted the MATHCOUNTS Competition for Grand Forks County. Sixty-one students from eight area schools participated in individual and team competitions. MATHCOUNTS promotes math excellence and competition for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students across North Dakota and nationally. Students begin each year by working through special study materials followed by a school team (four students each) and individual competition. The highest scoring school teams and individuals advance to county competitions where they attempt to qualify within ten regions for the state competition. The top four individual finalists and the top team coach at the state competition receive an all expense paid trip to compete at the national competition. This rewarding experience helps to promote the engineering profession as well as education in mathematics, science, and technology. In today’s increasingly technological and information-filled world, student participation in programs that promote team work and individual success, such as MATHCOUNTS, are an integral part of education. Congratulations to all competitors and especially to the winning team and individuals!

    1,700 students participate in Tri-College math contest—Posted on March 09, 2010 —

More than 1,700 students in grades six through 12 will be testing their mathematical skills at the 36th annual Tri-College University Mathematics Contest held at Minnesota State University Moorhead on Wednesday, March 17.

The competition consists of three levels: two high school levels for students in grades 11-12 and students in grades 9-10; and a middle school level for students in grades 6-8. Fifty schools are expected to participate in either the large school division or the small school division.

“The contest is meant to encourage those students who are really good in math to keep at it and to do more with it,” said Wally Sizer, MSUM's math contest coordinator. “We hope students walk away with a positive feeling about their skills and the math field in general.”

Students may participate in the individual written exam and/or the team exam. The top four teams and top 10 individuals in each division will be recognized.

Events are held throughout the campus. For more information or location information for photos, contact Wally Sizer, 218.477.4014 or sizer@mnstate.edu, or Tim Harms, 218.477.4016 or harms@mnstate.edu.
